Work Record Shoot 2

Plan for this work record
From this shoot i am also going to choose 2 photos and along with the 2 photos from the other shoot i'm going to manipulate them all in the same few ways. As a result i end up with a collection of the same 4 photos edited 3 - 4 different ways.

The idea it to contrast the other work record by looking at how you may perceive your self. This is the opposite to the other work record where i am looking at emphasis and how people may see the beauty in you.

Research influences

Maurizio Anzeri - embroidery
He is an Italian artist and photographer, based in London. In the series i am looking at he used embroidery in photographs to create really thought provoking and eerie images.

I am looking into this different type of embroidery to distort the facial features in my photos in this series instead of like in my other exam shoot where i was looking at emphasis and facial features. I think this is a really effective way of doing so.


In the first photo really love how simple yet effect the red thread in around the eye is. The thread is being used to frame the eye as well as distort the face subtle as the further out from the main section around the eye you get the thinner the red gets. I all like how the ear is the only break in the otherwise would have been circle.


In the second image he has used three different colours with the brightest causing the most distortion as well as pulling the eye to look at that first. The thicker and heavier the distortion the most pronounced and almost 3D look it gives off, like its further towards the viewer it is. This creates a wired sense of depth of field as a result making the viewer feel uncomfortable. The dark stitching around the right eye really makes it pop but also makes it seem like its following your movements which is really unsettling.


The last image i picked from the series is the one that is really distorted and eerie as he has used the white over the whole face, then used green along the jaw line and completely around the right eye. This really distorts the face almost like the person in the photo doesn't like how they look or they are trying to hide something. Also the way the eye is completely wrapped in green it becomes really off putting as it creates the idea of suffocation.

Yayoi Kusama
I have chosen to look back at this Japanese contemporary artist that was an example in the exam paper discussion. The reason i have done this is because in my work record 4 series i added a single dot over and either turning that section black and white or turning the back ground black and white. I think that if re look at that effect as it did create this distortion, i think if i added multiple dots like in Yayoi Kusama's images it could produce some really interesting and distorted images.


The first has the distorting effect where the lips look like a poka dot. As well as that because the poka dots are all different sizes it makes the feel like there lost in all the dot. I idea of where do you stop and the universe start. How much of you is influenced by the outside world.


I added this image in because of much the clothing the artist is wearing in the photo is so crazy and distorted that you cant make out any features. I really like how the circles are made into big curves as well.


Lastly i really how the use of monochromatic spots have been used everywhere to really though off the viewers brain as there is so much to take in. This makes the image really intense and also highly confusing so much so its like you can get disorientated just by looking at it for to long.

Straight images - originals


In the first photo i wanted a head on shoot. I used the settings ISO 100, F stop 5.6 and a shutter speed 1/125 seconds. I like the over all sweeping C curve of the head how that can lead the eyes in and down and out the photo. i also like how i have frame it so only half the face is in the photo as it allows the viewer to imagine the other half.


In this photo I used the settings ISO 100, F stop 6.3 and a shutter speed of 1/200. This allow me to adjust to the sun more. In this photo i was looking to show the strong curves on the face, eg the eye brows, beard and hair line. I have managed this but i also like how up close and personal this photo is.

How they where edited to from the base.


For this first photo i had to adjust the highlights as the sun had suddenly come out and the whites and highlight suddenly were slightly over exposed however i toned them down a little in Photoshop and so the photo look much better. Then i used the healing brush tool to remove the spot on the side of the face as it was distracting my eye and so it would distract the viewer.


The last photo i had to adjust the contrast as i wanted it to be a little higher and as a result i had to move the exposure over a little to compensate. I then used the spot healing brush tool to remove on or two hairs to make a little of a sharper curve of the beard line.

Computer manipulation 

The photos below are edited using Photoshop. I used the idea from work record 4 in my component 2 blogger to create contrast and therefore distorting the facial features. This is done in the same sort of way however i am doing more than one. This was the idea inspired by Yayoi Kusama and how confusing and chaotic her photos are.

They were edited further to the final pieces as shown below


First i will select the area i want to change to black and white using the tool button below. This allowed me to get the even circle so it didn't look patchy or like it was made up of lots of different straight lines.




I would then repeat that process as many times as i needed to over the whole photo in different sizes.

Physical manipulation

The photos below are edited using needle and thread. I used a puncher block in order to put pins in the curves and circles i wanted, this allowed me to try and get the same effect as my artist Maurizio Anzeri. However I didn't add as much as he did to my work because i wouldn't have had enough time to do so.


Firstly i took the photo i was working on and put it on the block and punched all the holes i need in the photo.


I then took different coloured thread and threaded it into the photo. Mainly around the eyes and face in order to distort and show curves off.

AO3:

The idea i expanded on from work record 4 in my preparatory shoots was a really good idea i think the photos i have now have been distorted in a wired way. I think it makes the viewer think about what they are seeing and every time they look at it they may see a new spot that they didn't before. As a result i think that it keeps the interest of the viewer for longer.
For the physical manipulation my first one that i did was the older female that is looking straight at the camera. I think you can tell that was my first as the thread isn't as prefected as the others. However I like how all the thread links to the side of the face from the red circles as then you can join them up in your head making a curve out of it that way. My best one for distortion tho i think is the older male where i used the thread thicker and had a lot of cross over. This really distorted the face and really shows the effect i was going for.

If i was to redo any of them i think i would have done something a little different on the older female in my physical manipulation. I would probably would have used red thread for the eye instead of blue. Also i think i would have used a smaller piece of string each time because i did spend a lot of time having to get rid of nots and dealing with brakes. I would therefore have used thicker thread.

AO1:

My work clearly shows the inspiration from my artists. The thread and needle idea for my photos shows how even a little of it will distort the face. Maurizio Anzeri's edits are however much more extreme than mine. As he used more thread also he would have had much more time than i would have. The pocka dots clearly show inspiration from the artist Yayoi Kusama however mine are in black and white. These edits are also a clear progression from the work done in my work record 4 in my preparatory shoot.

AO4: emphasise how the work has developed and how it has been influenced by prior research.

My work has obviously developed as the computer edits have been a step up from the ones in work record 4 preparatory shoot. As well as this i have also developed as i have done a physical manipulation which i haven't done before. I really have noticed that i like photographing my subject up close and personal. I also liked showing through my work the idea of how people see themselves, where they may have a distorted view of themselves. I like how the first shows how even the smallest thing can cause a distortion in my physical approach. In the computer edits i like how it shows like there whole world is changing from colour into black and white. It even shows the idea of the world crumbling and falling into this confusing chaos, where each thought adding to the chaos.

Final evaluation

Overall i liked portraying the idea of how peoples views and thoughts can become distorted. I think both the series work well together. With the first being the idea of how the eye can distort your view on something no matter how small that difference/ change is. I noticed how different each  piece looked even after one line was added because it became so distracting.
In the computer manipulation i really like how i improved on the previous one in work record 4 as it really showed distortion in a different way. With each spot added the image became more and more chaotic and really shows how each thought can cause a big difference.

Work Record Shoot 1

Plan for his shoot
The plan for this shoot and the other shoot is to use both shoots in my final pieces in with each photo chosen from the shoot being manipulated in a few different ways. I am going to use 2 photos from each shoot. So as a result i end up with a collection of the same 4 photos edited 3 - 4 different ways.

For this work record i am looking at emphasis and highlighting. I am planning on showing the beauty people see when they look at you. I'm going to show this perspective to then directly contrast the other work record.

Research influences

Jessa Fairbrother - Constellations and Coordinates
She is a British photographer and she uses the body to explore meanings and experience that can come through in stitches. She pierces and embroiders her pictures to extend the image beyond its restraints.

I have taken a lot of inspiration from her series titled 'Constellations and Coordinates'. I really like how in the series she uses the flowers to frame and emphasis parts of the images. I think i am planning to use my photos in the same way. One of my ideas is to stitch on flowers in circles and curves in the photos to emphasis a certain part of the facial structure or to frame the photo in the same way. As well as this i have thought about using the clockwork from work record 2 to make composite images with the same photos. All of of this is to emphasis facial features which is how im planning on having my own take on the idea, like Jessa Fairbrother does in her work however she uses the whole body and not the face.


In the first image she has embroidered an oval donut shape onto the back, this draws in the eyes of the viewer to this specific part. From there the C curves of the arms almost pull you into the image to the full dark oval which reminds me of the moon. Then you have the overall framing curve that implies a spherical shape but is broken by the body, which them pulls you into the start again. This whole system creates depth in the image and the blue embroidery breaks up the negative space around the subject.


The second image has the same use of pulling the eyes in and only if you were looking carefully would you have noticed the silver embroidered ring of flowers in the silver hair. This forces the view to take a longer time over the image as they don't want to have missed anything, this creates mystery and therefore intrigue in the photo. In this photo unlike the one above there is a set colour scheme of silver and white as the embroidery is all these colours, even the hair has this colour.


In the last image i have chosen this one has the most embroidery however doesn't look out of place. This is because the colours have a set scheme with these almost fire colours, where they are bursting out of the negative space to frame the photo. I really like how the way the flowers help emphasis the shapes created by the body. so the arch on the hips, the rectangle on the spin and the circle of the head.

Straight images - originals


I really love this photo because of all the lines and creases in the face for the different curves. For this photo i used ISO 100, F stop 8 and shutter speed 1/125 seconds. This photo has been taken from Work Record 4 as i didn't have the type of photo i wanted in this shoot.


This next photo i really like because of how sharp the curves of the outline of the subject is. I used ISO 100, F stop 7.1 and shutter speed 1/125 seconds. I like how there is depth to the photo where the in the foreground you have the pointed glasses that stick out, then you have the subject that is third dimensional then the flat background.

In the next photo i just used the spot healing brush over to remove any gum and distracting paint marks from the brick wall on the background.

Computer manipulation 


The photos below are edited using Photoshop. I used the cogs from work record 2 in my component 2 blogger to show the sharpness of some of the curves the facial structures made. As well as this i did it because i wanted to show how the facial structure if made by cogs and metal could look like in parts. I did this but also kept in mind the idea of emphasising certain parts of the face.

They were edited further to the final pieces as shown below


The first thing i did was use a cog from the shoots in work record 2 in my component 2. I then used the transform tool in photoshop to shrink the piece to fit where i wanted it to go.


I then used the blur tool to uses around the the edges which allowed the piece to fit and look like it was more apart of the photo than before.


I then repeated this process to the pieces i wanted and putting and adding them into the correct places i had chose.

AO3:

I like how the mechanisms of the face came out however the one of the young female side profile, was probably the weakest in the series. As the piece i choose didn't quite fit in the section i choose to put it in however it still shows the idea and what i was planning on going for.

I also ran out of time and was able to do the physical manipulation which links to the artist above. I think that if i have done that first instead of doing the writing i would have completed it all. However i have learnt from this and i am now more aware of how long a physical manipulation can take.

AO1:

My work doesn't link to the research in this post however is does link back to my work record 2. This shows that i wanted to go back and improve on what i did. I like tho how my work does highlight and emphasises the curves and parts of the face i wanted to bring forward. The idea of showing how some people can be seen as robots really comes across in this. However i needed to have practised the idea more as the first edits where not as good as the others. This is because the piece i wanted to put in may have not fit in the area quite perfectly.

I like how in the first edit it looks like the skin in that section has been removed to show the parts below. The next edit reminds me of how a jaw works. The third one is like you can see the cogs in the eyes and how the person is like a machine. The last one looks like the skin has been put back on however that is the only part that cannot be hidden.

AO4: emphasise how the work has developed and how it has been influenced by prior research.

I think that that my final pieces really show the idea of how things work however while still being part of the idea of highlighting the parts and curves of the face.

Final evaluation

Overall i think i could have done with more practice and i think that some of the edits suffered for the lack of experience. I also ran out of time because i didn't relieve how long a physical edit took to complete. However i think the idea i was going after is still effective.
